The Manuscript Critique

A manuscript critique is a general report on how effective a novel is overall. Think of it as a diagnostic review--helping you identify what's working and what needs attention before diving into deeper revisions.

Critiques address such questions as:

  • What are the manuscript's strengths?

  • Where might readers lose interest or get confused?

  • Does the story open with a compelling hook?

  • Is the story using a narrative structure that works?

  • Is the plot engaging and clear?

  • Are the characters believable and dynamic?

  • Are the themes and messages coming through effectively?

  • Does the story have a satisfying ending?

  • What should be the primary focus of revision work?
